I’ve long been drawn to depictions of Christ and the cross, but I had never seen artwork that captured the literal moment of the Eleventh Station - ‘Jesus nailed to the cross’.The seed of a print was in my mind when I chanced upon the Église Saint-Paul -Saint Louis church in the Marais district of Paris and saw a beautiful painting of exactly what I had in mind. Back in London I immediately set to work on this print. My aim was to document the raw painful power of the scene without sensationalising it.
This print is based on a drawing I did in 1988 when I was working as a cook in restaurants around Buffalo New York, and New York City. I clearly wasn’t feeling at the top of my game when I drew it. Things are much better now!
While visiting the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham, I visited the nearby Holy Trinity Church where I came upon a brass of Richard Babham and his wife. It was interesting doing research to make sure I interpreted her wardrobe properly.

How Stean Gorge is a gem of a find in the Yorkshire Dales. There was a large rock that had interesting lines and here it is as a print!
While in Liverpool I came across the Hod Carrier statue, a memorial to workers. Learn about it here. It stuck with me for awhile. I enjoyed making this print as I’ve always been in a Union. ‘Local 52 Ready to Work!’
When I was young I was fortunate enough to get involved with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater where I had to opportunity to meet Pete. He is a big influence on my life.
The Church of the Holy Cross in Mwnt Wales is a beautiful isolated ‘Chapel of Ease’. One one side were fields with sheep wandering freely and on the other was a drop to the sea. It was breathtaking.

I made this print after visiting Jervaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire. It’s a privately owned 12th c Cistercian Abbey and depends solely on donations. It is a peaceful place. It’s the largest print I’ve done to date. It measures 28 × 40cm.
I’ve long carried an image in my mind of a figure sitting on the floor hugging his knees… alone and isolated. I challenged myself to make a minimal almost ‘Isotope’ version of it.
